Ages: 8-12  Pages: 63  Genre: Fantasy

I’ve been waiting quite some time to choose a book from The Adventures of the Bailey School Kids” to profile on this blog. As a kid, this was hands down my favorite series of books (pre-Harry Potter, of course).

Liza, Eddie, Howie, and Melody are just your average elementary school students in a not-so-average-town. Baily City is home to some truly…unique grown-ups. From Vampires, to Ghosts, to Aliens and everything in between, these four kids must sometimes solve some serious mysteries when it comes to the origins (and the species!) of many of the big people running their town.

Take, for instance, this book where the new landscaper for the city also happens to be what the children suspect is an Ogre. Mr. Bigg seems like a strange man right off the bat with his funny appearance–but when the children realize that he’s somehow controlling the weather to keep people away they know he’s not all that he appears. Will the kids be able to get the giant brute to skiddadle before the city Easter Egg Hunt?

This series of books is absolutely perfect for boys and girls that have just gotten the hang of reading. Though relatively short, each one is a “chapter book” which will have your new reader glowing with pride when they come to the end. Try your best to collect them all!

Other children’s books by Debbie Dadey and Marcia Thornton Jones:

  • Werewolves Don’t Go to Summer Camp
  • The Ghostville Elementary Series
  • The Keyholders Series
